There are lots of different styles for Valentine’s garland. I’ve seen people use felt balls, felt hearts, heart shapes made from yarn, wood beads added to the garland. Feel free to add anything you’d like to your garland and make it your own!
Gather your supplies before jumping in. The pom-pom makers make this Valentine’s day garland go so much faster, but remember that it will still take a while to complete. Having everything ready to go helps.
Do this while watching a football game or television with your family.
Or it could be the perfect excuse to have craft night with your friends and make all of the pom-poms while you catch up with one another!
Once you get the hang of making the pom poms, they take about 3 minutes each to complete from start to finish.
TIP: The quality of the yarn will make a difference. The white pom poms were made from cheaper yarn which I thought was noticeable. This was not a big deal as my goal was to create a simple craft while adding a little bit of Valentine decor to my home. But, keep this in mind.

Tutorial for Valentine’s Day Pom Pom Garland
Before getting started, determine the length you would like your own garland.
I measured out 7 feet as my mantel is 6 feet; I wanted the garland to be a bit longer.
After you have decided on the length, that will help you gauge how many pom poms you need to make. I wanted mine closer together, but you could certainly plan on having your pom-poms spaced out more.
For this fun garland, I used four different colors (a skein of yarn for each pom-pom color) for a total of 28 pom-poms. You could easily only use 9 pom poms and still have a pretty look.
One skein is enough yarn to make A LOT of pom poms. So if you have some pretty yarn at home, you could likely make an entire DIY pom pom garland with one skein.

Make the Pom Poms
Before this project, I had always used a fork or a homemade cardboard form to make my pom poms for crafts in the past. But, I asked for pom pom makers for Christmas and I’m so glad I did! This handy tool makes it super easy.
Most packages contain makers for several different sizes of pom poms so you have the ability to vary the size.
- Wrap yarn around one side of the pom pom maker until it is full. Trim yarn, then wrap yarn on the other side of the pom pom maker, trimming when it is full.
- Trim around the edges of the ring.
- Cut a long piece of yarn ~12 inches and use this to tie a double knot in the middle of the pom-pom. The strands of yarn you use to tie the center of each pom pom needs to be long enough to tie the pom pom onto your twine later.
- Remove the pom pom from the maker.
If you still find it confusing to make a yarn pom pom, this video has a simple tutorial.
Shape the Pom Pom and Tie onto Twine
After removing the pom-pom from the maker, fluff it with your hands. Then, using sharp scissors, take a moment to shape pom pom so it is a neat and pretty ball. Be sure to leave the long pieces so you can tie the pom pom onto your twine!
When tying the balls onto the twine, it’s helpful to lay the twine out flat so you can ensure proper spacing of pom poms.
Hang Pom Pom Garland on Mantel
This Valentine’s Day pom pom garland is pretty enough to hang in your living space! Happy Valentine’s Day!
FAQs
The number of pom poms needed for a garland depends on the length of garland. For a seven foot garland, 28 pom poms will ensure the pom poms are close together. If you prefer them to be spaced apart, nine pom poms is enough.
The quality of the pom poms are a direct correlation to the quality of the yarn. Thick wool yarn will produce fluffier pom poms. Another factor is ensuring your pom pom maker is full when wrapping.
