Let’s get started on crafting these mini Santa hats! Here is what you’ll need.
Supplies
Here is what you’ll need:
You might just have all that you need at home. But, I’ve included a few Amazon links should you need to stock up on any of the supplies before you begin.
- Wine corks (For reference, I used 62 for both hats)
- Acrylic paint in red and white
- Craft paint brushes
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Paper towels and cup of water to rinse brushes

I do a lot of craft projects, so I usually have most of what I need on hand for a simple project like this.
However, I was surprised to see just how many wine corks I had stashed away! I’ve been saving them over the years, always thinking I’d eventually find a way to use them.
A few years ago, I made a wine cork pumpkin, which was such a fun project. But now, to clear out my supplies a bit, I figured it was time to put these corks to good use again!

And, more wine corks….

I took this project outside to enjoy the beautiful fall weather. We added a pool a few years back, so I take every chance I get to relax outside and enjoy it.
Before you get started, be sure to protect your workspace. Lay down an old towel or something similar to keep your surface clean, and you’re all set!
Sort Wine Corks by Size
Corks come in a variety of sizes, and for this project, using similar-sized corks gives the best results. If you’re working with old corks, take a moment to sort them by size to make assembly easier.
Grouping corks of similar size will ensure a more balanced and polished final look.

Turn Corks Same Direction
For a cleaner look, make sure to align all the corks in the same direction, with any corkscrew holes facing the same way.
This simple step will create a nicer finish when your project is complete.
Determine Number of Corks for Each Color
There’s no exact number of corks required for this project, but here’s a guideline to help you plan: I used 5 white and 7 red corks for the small Santa hat, and 19 white and 31 red for the larger one.
Adjust as needed based on the size you’d like to create!
Paint the Corks
Some corks were more porous than others and needed two coats of paint. Make sure to paint both ends of each cork so your Santa hats can look great from any angle.
With this acrylic craft paint, the corks dry to the touch in about 10 minutes.

Just be careful around the edges to keep the paint neat and avoid smudging onto the cork body.

Hot Glue the Corks Together
Use hot glue to attach the corks together, being cautious as it can get very hot. You’ll likely need several glue sticks for this step.
Once you glue each cork, hold it in place for a few seconds to make sure they’re securely bonded.

Make sure to apply glue wherever the corks will make contact with each other. Once again, hold them in place several seconds to ensure good adhesion.

You may need to add hot glue in any gaps where the corks aren’t sticking together properly.
No need to worry; it’s easy to go back and apply more glue if the hat doesn’t feel secure.

The Tip of the Hat
You have a couple of options for the tip of the Santa hat. You can either continue using wine corks or add a large pom pom or another fun element for a playful touch.
I chose to continue with the wine corks and love the result.
Making a wine cork Santa hat is a straightforward and enjoyable project that’s perfect for getting into the holiday spirit. If you have some old corks lying around, this is a great way to repurpose them into something festive.
It’s a simple craft that anyone can do, whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just looking for a fun way to pass the time.

One of the best things about this project is how easy it is.
With just a few materials—wine corks, paint, and hot glue—you can create a Santa hat that adds a nice touch to your holiday decor. The steps are clear, so it’s a great option for both solo crafting or a group activity with family or friends.
Plus, it’s a chance to chat and share some laughs while you work on something together!
As you put your Santa hat together, feel free to get creative. You can stick with just corks or add a large pom pom at the top for a bit of fun. This project gives you the flexibility to make it your own, which is always a nice bonus.
Whether you’re keeping the hats for yourself or giving them as gifts, they’re sure to be a hit.

Conclusion
The wine cork Santa hat project is a practical and enjoyable way to embrace the holiday season. It helps clear out some clutter while also allowing you to create something unique and festive.
So grab your supplies, invite some friends or family to join in, and enjoy crafting these simple yet charming hats that will be a cute addition to your holiday celebrations!
