The season of holiday cheer is upon us, and while it’s fun to gather together and watch movies, picking the right one can be a daunting task for family movie night.
This printable list of top-rated family-friendly Christmas movies (and some that are not so family-friendly) will help you make the most of this merry season.
One of my favorite ways to get into the Christmas spirit during the holiday season is by snuggling up by a cozy fire with a warm blanket and hot chocolate while watching Christmas classics!
But, there are plenty of new Christmas movies that have made their way onto my list of favorites. Grab your blanket and let’s get started!

Where to Watch Christmas Movies
Christmas movies can be found on a number of stations during the holiday season. If you aren’t sure where to find a movie you are interested in seeing, Google it! It will often show watch options and TV channels for viewing.

Rated G or Not Rated
Get the whole family in the holiday spirit with these G rated (or not-rated) movies. This portion of the list is perfect for young kids or even adults that love the nostalgia of some of the old holiday classic movies we watched when we were kids.
Once again, there are a few newer movies thrown into the mix. Enjoy!
A Charlie Brown Christmas
A family favorite holiday tradition from 1965. Charlie Brown tries to find the true meaning of Christmas. The show has great life lessons for kids of all ages.
A Christmas Story
A classic movie from 1983.
Frosty the Snowman
This 30 minute cartoon is another family tradition in most homes.
Mickey’s Christmas Carol
The 1983 cartoon is an adaptation of the original The Christmas Carol.
Miracle on 34th Street
A 1949 movie that is good enough to stick around over the years.
The Muppet Christmas Carol
The Muppet’s version of The Christmas Carol. This is a fun movie to watch on Christmas Eve!
Noelle
One of the new movies on my list. Noelle is sweet, fun, and great for the entire family.
The Polar Express
A little boy takes a wild adventure to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. The Polar Express is a computer animated film.
Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer
This will always be one of my favorite movies. Truly one of the original holiday movies.
The Santa Clause 2
This is the second movie. The Santa Clause is on the list as well, but is rated PG.
Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town
Small Town Christmas
The Sound of Music
Any night is a good time for this movie. But, the perfect time is during Christmas.
White Christmas
PG Rated
For just a tad bit more maturity with Christmas movie night, opt for a PG film. But, know the movies on this portion of the list are still appropriate for nearly all family members.
Arthur Christmas
A Boy Called Christmas
I watched A Boy Called Christmas for the first time last Christmas and adored this great movie!
Christmas with the Kranks
If I’m honest, I have never seen this one. But, my daughter has a tradition of watching it every year when my husband and I are on a date night around the holidays.
She said it had to make my list!
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I’m not certain if this is officially considered a Christmas movie, but you will not be disappointed.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch
Buddy (Will Ferrell) was raised as an Elf at the North Pole. But, he goes to New York City to learn about his real father. Silly, touching, and definitely one to put on your holiday movie bucket list.
Gremlins
A bit of a scary Christmas movie. While the rating is PG, just use a little caution with little people as some scenes are a definitely scary.
Home Alone
This is on nearly everyone’s list of Christmas movies! It’s a must-watch.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Kevin manages to get into even more trouble.

The beautiful story of George Bailey (James Stewart) in which his guardian angel reveals how life would be had he never existed.

Edward Scissorhands
This is a bit of a different Christmas movie that many do not even classify as a Christmas movie! But, it is one I think you will enjoy.
Four Christmases
Vince Vaughn and Reece Witherspoon will make you laugh out loud in this hilarious comedy. The first scene is definitely for mature audiences.

A great Christmas movie to watch with a best friend.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
My husband must see this movie every year.

These are popular movies for a much more mature audience.

Die Hard
I’m sure you hear controversy every year about whether or not Die Hard classifies as a Christmas movie. At this point, it would be hard not to include on a list of movies for Christmas!
Love Actually
A super funny, yet touching movie about true love. A few of the story lines might make you blush, but the message is beautiful.
Best Hallmark Christmas Movies
There are SO many Hallmark movies to love this time of year. During the Christmas season, we often will just have a Hallmark movie on in the background while we are doing things around the house. The perfect time to write out your Christmas wish list!
Even my husband and son find themselves getting lost in these great Christmas movies.
