What is Scattergories
If you’re not familiar with the classic Scattergories game, these are the basics of the word game.
Scattergories is a party game that can be played with two or more people. The object of the game is to score points by coming up with words that fit into a category, starting with a specific letter of the alphabet.
For example, if the letter “C” is the chosen and the category is “Things you wear,” players might write down “coat,” “clothes,” or “cape.”
The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of three minutes. Players take turns rolling the dice and coming up with words that fit into the given category.
At the end of each round, players tally up their points and the next round begins. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins!

How to Play this Thanksgiving Party Game
Get ready to play some fun Thanksgiving games. The main objective is to see how much fun everyone can have!
But, of course there are some rules and detailed instructions to keep everyone on the same page.
Pass out Supplies
Get a group of family or friends together and provide each participant with
1) a copy of a blank answer sheet to write their responses.
2) a pencil or pen.
3) The game card / page with the list of categories.
Choose Category List
Decide on the category list for the round.
All players will have a sheet of paper with their own list, but the all participants must be using the same list number. For example all participants will be generating words based on categories from LIST 1.
There are many Thanksgiving categories, categories for fall activities, Christmas related categories, and just general categories that relate to this time of year.
If you love Thanksgiving word games, you’ll also love these Thanksgiving word search puzzles (click to go to post).
Roll Dice
Take turns rolling either one or two dice (each person gets to decide if they want to roll one or two).
The number rolled on the dice will determine the letter of the alphabet for game play. For example 1 = T, 2 = H, 3 = A, 4 = N, etc. See picture below for further clarification on determining different letters for each round.
Set Timer for 3 Minutes
Once you have determined the chosen letter, make sure all participants are ready to play this exciting Thanksgiving game. The time limit for play is 3 minutes.
Write Words Beginning with Letter
Each player must think of a word that begins with the specified letter for each of the categories on the list. To score a point, your word must not match any other players word choice.
So try to be creative with the words you select!
The player with the most points (different words) at the end of the round wins.
For more an even more fun-filled time, the ultimate winner can be the best two out of three rounds. There is sure to be lots of laughs for all!
A perfect way to make this work for a large group is to pair little kids with older kids so they can work together as a team. It can be challenging for little people to think quickly with this word categories game.
Also note, if you own the actual Scattergories game but want to stick with the Thanksgiving lists I created for you, just grab the letter die and use that to determine the letters.
Thanksgiving-Themed Categories
There are 6 different versions / lists with Thanksgiving topics throughout the lists. While not every category is holiday related, there is enough Thanksgiving themed topics to keep with the spirit of the holiday celebration.
I even through in a few categories for the upcoming holiday of Christmas!
