Instructions for Play

This is a fun Christmas game that can be played with family and friends. It is simple to learn and only requires a few materials.

The object of the game is to see how many words you can make using the letters in the word given.

To play, you will need a pen / pencil and paper (this printable) for each participant plus timers to track the length of play that will sound an alarm to alert you when time is up.

The players have two minutes to write down as many words as possible that can be made using the letters in the provided word, in this case “M-E-R-R-Y-C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S”.

All words must be at least two letters long.

The player who writes down the most words wins the round. The first person to win three rounds is the overall winner of the game.

This fun Christmas activity is great for building vocabulary and making holiday memories!

Other Rules and Variations of Game Play

  • The amount of time can be changed to 3 minutes, 5 minutes, or any other agreed upon time frame if you feel 2 minutes is not enough.
  • If playing with young children, keep it as one point for each word regardless of the number of letters within the generated word.
  • To make the game more challenging, change the point system to one point per letter in each word generated. This would encourage more creativity and the use of longer words.
  • Alternatively, count one point for word with 3 letters or less and two points for 4 or more letter words.
  • Yet another way to make it more challenging is to make a rule that in order for a word to count for points, no one else can use it. SO, this would mean you need to be as creative as possible with your word choices to ensure your generated words are unique!
  • Try using only Christmas words! This would make it extra challenging.

Obviously the rules will need to be modified to fit the age and vocabulary skills of the players involved. Younger children (first grade kiddos for example) and college kids will likely have different ability levels!

No answer key is needed! If there is a quarrel about a word, just look it up in the dictionary to check the accuracy of the spelling.

Word Families

A great hint for younger kids or even adults that are having trouble getting started is to use word families or rhyming words to help generate more words.

For example, when trying to create words from various letters within “MERRY CHRISTMAS”, you could use the ending “AT” to generate a number of words (i.e., chat, mat, sat, rat, etc).

Once you run out of words using that ending, find another such as words that end in “ART”.

Change Out Vowels

Sometimes you can generate a lot of words merely by changing out the vowels. For example, let’s say you start with the word “MIT”, you could then change out the vowel and create MET and MAT.

You get the idea!

Don’t Overthink It

Start by scanning the group of letters for words that are easy to spot. Then use the strategies above to help you come up with more!

When it comes to scoring, don’t forget that shorter words are just as valuable as longer ones if you decide to score one point per word. In fact, sometimes it’s easier to find shorter words because they’re less hidden among the other letters.

Finally, don’t get too caught up in trying to find the perfect word.

But, it’s important to keep an eye on the clock and move on if you’re not finding anything good.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a How Many Words Can You Make From Merry Christmas champion!

Play for Prizes

A great way to make the game a bit more interesting is to play for prizes!

There are many easy and inexpensive prizes that can be used for family game winners.

One option is to use items that are already around the house as prizes.

This could include things like a special dessert, extra screen time, or choosing the activity for the next family game night.

Another option is to purchase inexpensive prizes specifically for gaming. This could include small toys, candy, stickers, or even a fun gift certificate to a favorite store.

Whatever prize is chosen, it should be something that will excite the family and encourage them to keep playing games together.
