Christmas is just around the corner and I can't stop myself from filling my house with buffalo plaid everything! Today I'm showing you this simple DIY buffalo plaid table runner that even a complete beginner can make. That's me, I promise!

Supplies for DIY table runner:
- 1 ½ yards of your favorite fabric. It doesn't have to be buffalo plaid;-) Here is a link to red and black buffalo check fabric sold by the half yard on Amazon.
- Fabric scissors.
- Thread to match fabric
- Sewing machine. Here is a link to my model. It works great for beginning sewers such as myself.
- Straight sewing pins
STEP 1: Cut the fabric to the size needed for your table runner.
The dimensions of my fabric was 39 x 59 inches. I cut it down to 17 x 59 inches for this table runner. The blocks on the plaid made it super easy to keep my line straight.
I have another fun project I will be posting about soon using the remainder of the fabric. Stay tuned for that!
(UPDATE: I made DIY gift bags for Christmas presents. A full tutorial is given so you can make your own! I also show you how to tie a fancy bow to make the gift bags extra special!)
Step 2: Measure about ½ inch from the longest edges and pin.
This particular fabric was lined, so it required the pins to be fairly close together. Otherwise, it would not have been as even as I wanted it to be for the ironing / pressing step. (see below)
Step 3: Iron the pinned edge to make sewing your straight seam easier.
By the way, I have mentioned several times in recent posts that I'm not much of a seamstress. A tip that is pretty basic, but I somehow overlooked: if your pins have a plastic head, ironing over them will melt the head. Oops!
Step 4: Sew a straight seam along both long edges.
Step 5: Repeat steps 2-5 for the narrow ends.
You're done with your DIY Buffalo Plaid Table Runner!
Finding ways to personalize your home on a dime is an adventure. I truly believe that our homes can be beautiful without spending a fortune. Sometimes I take it as a challenge to find inexpensive projects that make a big impact.
Are you loving buffalo check this year?
It has been the rage the past several winters and I'm hoping the trend doesn't die anytime soon. I've managed to make quite the collection of buffalo plaid items!
Neutral Christmas decor is very appealing, but something about this red and black look is so comforting to me in the winter months.
It looks very holiday, but can carry into the rest of the winter months seamlessly!
Candles are in almost every room in my home. I love the hygee feel of a candle burning while I'm snuggled up with a blanket and good book. That doesn't happen as often as I'd like, but a girl's gotta have goals!
Just writing that makes me want to grab a blanket;-)

- Check out the deer pillow! I posted about several inexpensive Christmas pillows from Amazon.
- I love our coffee table. If you'd like to try this chalk paint look for yourself, my tutorial about how I painted it is at Painted Furniture / A Before and After.
- The buffalo check pillow on the coach was made by yours truly. Make your own envelope pillow covers by following my simple tutorial.
I hope you feel inspired to make your own DIY Buffalo Plaid Table Runner!
If I can sew this, anyone can!
It's fun to create something with your own two hands. That is possibly one of my favorite things about a DIY project.
