Tween Bedroom Makeover: A Before and After
Welcome back for the final post in my before and after series for the month of July. I hope that this series has provided some inspiration to makeover something in your home that needed a little extra love. Today, I will be showing you a Tween Bedroom Makeover!

Before Pictures of Little Girl Bedroom
Fairies, fairies everywhere! I painted the wall in two colors of pink, free handing the hills. Stencils were used to paint the fairies, flowers, clouds, mushrooms, etc. It was great for that stage of my daughter’s life. She had the pink fairy room for about 4 years and was ready for a change.
Another Before
(sorry about the picture quality…turns out I didn’t take many pictures of the fairy room!):

Material Used for Makeover
- Open Air paint color by Sherwin Williams
- IKEA string lights hung on curtains. Here are similar twinkle lights on Amazon.
- Similar white desk
- Similar gold table
- Chalk paint and spray paint to update old decor (my favorite way to get a little extra life out of home decor!)
- pretty baskets for storage on bookshelves (ours are from IKEA)
- Washi tape to cover plain light switch cover
As I mentioned, we were done with pink. She selected the color Open Air by Sherwin Williams. It’s a very soft and peaceful color.
We hung a string of lights from IKEA above her bed. The lights are so fun at night!
The above desk was repainted during the makeover process. We didn’t change the color, but it needed some touch-ups. It’s an inexpensive particle board top, so we had to do a few minor repairs to the surface before painting. I gave it several coats of polycrylic to make it more durable.
She really wanted a reading nook, so the above picture shows just that. I threw an off-white blanket over an old chair so it would match the colors of the room. I considered painting it, but this was a LOT easier…and softer!
The dollhouse bookshelf above used to have pink accents. I spray painted the trim gold to make it look a little more mature than the pink. The baskets are from IKEA and help her things stay a bit more tidy.
In the above photo, also notice the jewelry box knobs. They were pink before, but got a coat of gold spray paint as well.
Check out the painting process of the dollhouse bookshelf and jewelry box:
I used painter’s tape to keep from getting gold paint all over the white portion of the shelves. I was a bit messy and lazy and didn’t cover enough of the shelves, but it worked out in the end. I just used mineral spirits to wipe away the mess.
Despite splatters being everywhere, it really did wipe away pretty easily with mineral spirits. Frankly, it was probably less work than if I would have covered all of the white areas.
I also used gold spray paint on the knobs of the jewelry box and the trash can.
Take another look at the gallery wall above the bookshelf:
My daughter picked out a few items that she thought she would really love for her gallery wall. For advice on creating a gallery wall, check out a previous post of mine for guidance: How To Create a Gallery Wall That’s Personal To You.
She covered her light switches with washi tape to match the decor. I think she did a great job!
What do you think? She loves it and feels like it is much more mature than the pink fairy room.
Have you completed a tween bedroom makeover? Or perhaps redecorated a bedroom? What changes did you make? I’d love to hear your feedback!
Thanks for checking out my before and after series this month!

Sweet way to transition to adulthood, slowly. Love the gold and mint.
My daughter loves it! Thank you and have a great day!
Okay.. I think this room is AMAZING!!! I am a grown adult and still would like to have a room like this one. I love the color palette. I also like how you transformed that doll house. I would have never thought to use washi tape on outlet covers, but I’m definitely going to use that idea in my new office.
Thank you for the kind words, Crystal! Washi tape is used for just about everything at my house…it’s awesome. I’m not going to lie, as a grown adult I think I want some twinkle lights in my room now!
Wow, this turned out so pretty. I’m sure your daughter will love it for many years! My girls have the same doll house. I’m going to pin this for later and repurpose their doll house just like you did for your daughter!
This is so sweet, Amanda! She loves everything gold and spray paint made it possible for me to reuse a lot of what we already had.
Love the new look. The room was adorable before and after. Especially love the reading nook.
Thank you! I do kind of miss the fairies…But, this fits her age better. She loves the reading nook…she could write in her bullet journal for hours by the light of her string lights!
I love the makeover! That blue is my favorite color! I love the fuzzy stool for her vanity too 🙂 great job!
Thank you, Corinne! It really is a pretty color. The fuzzy stool is super fun…not something she will sit at for hours, but cute;-)
The room turned out beautifully! Love these colors for a girl’s room, so cute.

I absolutely love the makeover! I’m sure your tween was very happy with the result. It looks sophisticated and cute, too! Perfect color scheme.
Thanks, Carolyn! That’s so sweet of you! She loves it.
I’m not a tween but I do love before and afters and this is so cute!!
Thanks so much, Sarah!
oh my I love it! I am about to be doing my 5 & 1 1/2 room! We just moved into our own house and I am super excited to decorate and revamp everything.. im sure my pocket is not, lol! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Jessica! It was really fun to decorate. Good luck with yours!
Everything looks great. I might have to paint sis’s dollhouse shelf too. The gold is a great idea. Love the gallery wall!
Thank you, Tina! The gold accent on the bookshelf turned out great…the pink just didn’t work with the changes we made. I can’t wait to see what you do to your girl’s space! As you know with daughters, it is ever changing!
Beautiful colors! I love the curtains and the picture above the reading nook chair!
Thank you, Jenifer! I think she did a great job picking the room color. It is a perfect, peaceful hue for a bedroom. The curtains are black out curtains from Pottery Barn…occasionally my girl loves a good sleep in;-)
