HOUSE CLEANING TIPS: 5 FULL DAYS OF TIPS FOR CLEANING THE ENTIRE HOME

Let’s jump right into today’s focus!

Tips to Clean a Bedroom:

1. Make Your Bed Every Day

Sometimes it feels like you might not have the time, but this one, simple task can set the stage for the rest of your day.

Several years back, my husband started taking on this responsibility! I love that he does this each day. As US Navy Admiral, William H, McRaven says, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

2. Put Away Clothing Daily

Laundry is a constant battle in most busy homes, ours included. Do your best to keep the dirty laundry picked up and in the dirty laundry hamper.

When it comes to clean clothes, try to make it a routine to put them away as soon as they are folded.

3. Open the Blinds

Keeping the blinds open will make your room feel brighter and in turn, cleaner! I like to make a habit of opening our bedroom blinds each morning. What a wonderful way to start the day!

4. Change Sheets Weekly

I designate Sunday or Monday each week as the day I change our sheets. Keeping a consistent routine is a great way to remember when to do this.

This topic makes me think of my college days. I lived in a co-ed dorm my freshman year that was much like an apartment.

I’ll never forget talking with some guys down the hall that indicated they washed their sheets only once, maybe twice a semester.  Umm, what?!

Something tells me their mothers had no idea how their boys were living! Yuck!

5. Clean Off Night Stand Daily

The bedroom should be calm and relaxing. Take a few moment to clear off anything that might have landed on your nightstand as this is a space that will be staring at you when you are in bed.

Keep only the essentials by your bed.

6. Clean Any Bedroom Mirrors or Glass

One time weekly is plenty for cleaning mirror and glass. Sometimes it gets pushed to every other week at my home and that still manages to be good enough.

7. Dust Weekly

A clean, dust free sleep space is a must. When I dust, I do this first thing in the morning so things have settled down at bed time.

I have a lot of painted furniture, so I typically just wipe down our bedroom furniture with a slightly dampened cloth. That typically does the trick!

8. Vacuum or Sweep Weekly

Depending on the type of flooring you have, vacuum OR sweep your bedroom floors weekly.

I tend to fold my laundry in our bedroom floor, so it’s key to have a clean floor for the clean clothes!

Our carpet is almost 13 years old, and we desperately need to replace it. I am torn between getting carpet again or laminate flooring that looks like hard wood. I would LOVE your feedback, so if you have an opinion on that subject leave a comment below!

There you have it!

  1. I’ve had carpet in our current home since 2006. We ripped it all out & put down LVP. Best decision ever. So easy to clean & eith two big dogs, it’s so much healthier. When we ditched the carpets, my chronic sinus issues disappeared too. That was an added bonus. I will never have carpet in any home I live in again.

  2. Yes, carpet gets dirty and is not as easy to clean as laminate or tile flooring. But, if you cover your tile or laminate flooring with rugs, you’re back to the same problem of keeping the rugs clean. One advantage that carpet has over hard surfaces, especially if you’re like me and like to go barefoot often is that granules of sand or dirt settle down into the carpet fibers until the carpet is vacuumed. When walking across carpet, one does not normally feel any grit on the surface because of this. Try walking across laminate or tile flooring that has not been swept or vacuumed recently — yuck! In addition, tile or laminate has to be swept or vacuumed *and* mopped to look clean. If rugs top the floors, in addition, you must periodically have the rugs cleaned. I have laminate in my kitchen and foyer not covered by rugs, tile in my baths, and carpet everywhere else. I also have a great Bissell carpet cleaner which I use when needed. No, my house does not sport today’s most stylish look, but while living here, my feet are very happy!!!

  3. Carpet is wonderful to step on when you get out of bed but realistically it is difficult to clean around the legs of the bed and other furniture. For easy cleaning I like a hard floor with area rugs.

  4. I have ceramic tile through most of the house. With dogs and rowdy boys it is definitely a time saver and easy to clean.

    1. Oh Gina, now I’m rethinking carpet vs tile again;-) I have a feeling I will find pros and cons about anything. At this point I just need to make the decision. Thanks so much for weighing in! Have a wonderful week!

  5. I love the look of hardwood flooring…..BUT in my bedrooms I want carpet. I don’t want to walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night on hardwoods, etc. I want the feel of carpet. Put house shoes on, you might say….well, yes, I could do that, but I like walking barefoot on carpet.

    1. Thanks so much for your input, Mary! I think we’ve decided to go with carpet for the very same reasons. It’s on the list of things to do as the budget allows! Have a great week!

  6. Thank you for this article! I tend to vacuum twice a week because I love the way the carpet looks. BUT if you want my opinion about your flooring (if it’s not too late), I would get hardwood floors. We built a house (but later had to move away and sell it), and it had all hardwood floors. I had a few rugs in key places, but I just loved the hardwood flooring. It was so much easier to keep clean. I just dust mopped it regularly and it was shiny and clean. Guests always commented on how shiny the floors were. We had bamboo floors, so when someone made a scrape in the wood, it was the same color all the way through it and not very noticeable.

    1. Thanks so much for your input, Katie! I have yet to make a decision…I love your advice. Hardwood floors are absolutely classic, so I know this would be a wonderful choice. Enjoy the rest of your week!
