How to Restain Worn Leather Furniture with Rub and Restore
Leather furniture is built to last, but over time, couches can fade, crack, or look worn. Instead of replacing a well-loved leather couch, an easy way to bring it back to life is by restaining it. I recently tried Rub and Restore and was amazed at how simple the process was. In just a few steps, my couch looked fresh and new again.
If you’re dealing with a worn leather couch, chair, or other leather furniture, this post will show you how to restore it with minimal effort and great results.
Please note that this was my experience. Go to the Rub’ n Restore website for videos and more tutorials. I highly recommend this product!

Gather Your Supplies
Before starting, make sure you have everything you need:
- Rub and Restore color of choice – Pick a shade that matches or enhances your couch. (Note I have linked to the colors available on Amazon. If you do not see a color you are looking for, go directly to their website for more options).
- Applicator sponge or soft cloth – Helps spread the stain evenly.
- Leather cleaner – Removes dirt and oils for better adhesion.
- Protective gloves – Keeps hands clean while applying the stain.
- Towels – Protect floor.

Handy tip: Prepare Ahead!
I strongly suggest ordering a swatch of color options from the Rub ‘n Restore website to get the closest match possible. I initially thought Chocolate would be the best fit, but Cherrywood ended up being a better match. To slightly adjust the tone, I mixed in a few drops of Chocolate—and it turned out perfect!
Having everything ready makes the process smoother and ensures the best results.

Clean and Prep the Leather
Dirt, oils, and grime can prevent the stain from absorbing properly, so cleaning the couch is an important first step.
Be sure to visit the Rub ‘n Restore website for specific cleaning instructions, as the type of leather can affect the process.

Use a gentle leather cleaner and wipe the entire surface with a clean cloth. Pay special attention to armrests and seat cushions, where buildup tends to be heavier.
Once the couch is dry, it’s ready for the first coat of stain.

Let’s go!
Start with a thin layer of Rub and Restore using a slightly dampened sponge or soft cloth. Work in circular motions, making sure to cover the leather evenly.
It’s best to apply a small amount at a time, avoiding heavy saturation. If your couch has seams or creases, use the edge of the sponge to press the stain into those areas.

Let It Dry and Add More Layers as Needed
Once the first coat dries (usually within minutes), check for any uneven spots. Adding multiple thin coats creates a natural, blended look.
Each layer deepens the color and improves coverage, so keep applying until you achieve the desired shade.
Buff and Seal for a Finished Look
After the final coat has dried, use a clean cloth to gently buff the surface. This step smooths out any streaks and enhances the leather’s natural sheen.
A soft, lint-free cloth or microfiber cloth works best for buffing.
If extra protection is needed, a leather sealant can add durability and help maintain the finish.
