The occasional warm day has really gotten me in the mood to transition some of my winter decor into spring. I’m anxious to show you how to make DIY bird nests for spring decor!

This fun project is super simple and inexpensive and in minutes you’ll have your own nests for decorative bird eggs or plastic Easter eggs. Or even make tiny nest for small wreaths for your front door!

How to Make An Artificial Bird Nest:

This is a messy project that is best to complete outdoors with good ventilation. There are a variety of different materials you can find at a craft store, and even the Dollar Store, that are great for building nests.

Just be sure you select material that resembles real bird nests. I created a delicate nest, because I thought it looked most like a real bird’s nest I would find made of natural materials.

Supplies

  • Spanish moss or other brown natural moss (I found mine at Dollar Tree. I didn’t see a similar product on Amazon for a reasonable price. My bag was $1.00! The natural/wood color of the moss I got worked well for nests)
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Krylon Sealer
  • Disposable gloves
  • Decorative eggs (Mine were found on clearance after Easter last year)

Use Spray Adhesive to Shape Faux Nest

My friend is spraying the nest with the spray adhesive. We both wore gloves as we did not want the adhesive spray directly on our skin. As she sprayed the nest material, I formed it into a nest shape.

If you have a smooth surface that is free of debris, it is a good idea to press the bottom of the nest slightly onto the flat surface so it will sit upright.

I left the top edges somewhat loose because I wanted the natural look, but you could make the top of the nest more compact if you’d like.

There are certainly different ways to shape the nests. A great alternative is to use a bowl, spray a little bit of the adhesive spray on the nest and push it into the bottom of the bowl.

The best part is you can make these different sizes. A larger nest or a small nest, find the perfect size for your spring decor.

If you are using one for a small grapevine wreath to display on your front porch, you might opt for a smaller nest!

Seal DIY Bird’s Nest

After shaping the nests, they were left in the garage for the spray adhesive to dry. Then I applied several coats of the Krylon Sealer to keep them from being so messy in our home. The sealer keeps the nest from falling apart so easily.

Let them dry overnight. Wait until the next day to add decor elements.

Add Plastic Eggs or Little Bird to Nest

Now the fun part begins!

Go through your Easter decor and add cute birds, wooden eggs, or whatever you have to make these nests fit into your home decor.

You could certainly use hot glue to hold the eggs and birds in place. If you opt to do this (I did not), use the glue gun to put a dab of glue on the decor element then hold it directly and firmly where you want it in the nest for 30+ seconds.

You could also take it up a notch and paint the nests!

Acrylic paint would probably work, but spray paint would be your easiest option if you have this in your craft supplies. Different colors of paints would be so much fun or stick with one solid color. Some ideas are white paint, different mixes of blues. Get creative.
