Supplies for Painted Rocks
Before diving into the painting process, it’s important to gather your supplies. You won’t need much, which makes this a budget-friendly craft.
- Rocks: Smooth, flat stones work best for painting. These can be found in your backyard, at the beach, or purchased from craft stores.
- Acrylic Paint: This is the best type of paint for rock art because it dries quickly and provides vibrant, lasting colors.
- Paint Brushes: Different sizes are ideal, from small detail brushes to larger ones for base coats.
- Sealant: If your painted rocks will be displayed outside, a clear sealant is helpful to protect them from weather and wear.
- Sharpie or Paint Pens: These are great for adding fine details like faces or lettering.

Simple Halloween Designs for Painted Rocks
Now comes the fun part: choosing your designs!
There’s no need to be a master artist for this craft—simple designs can be just as effective.
Take a look at mine and you’ll see that mediocre art skills don’t matter. You can still have fun and create cute rocks to place around your home this Halloween.
For inspiration, I looked at various Bullet Journal Halloween doodles I found online. They tend to be pretty simple to replicate and often come with drawing instructions.
Here are a few easy ideas for Halloween-themed painted rocks:
Spooky Ghosts
Ghosts are a Halloween classic and super easy to paint.

Start with a smooth white base coat, then use black paint or a Sharpie to add wide, surprised eyes and an open mouth. You can add a little glow-in-the-dark paint for an extra eerie effect.

Jack-o’-Lantern Faces
Pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns are perfect for Halloween painted rocks and my favorite.

Paint the entire rock orange, then draw black triangle eyes, a nose, and a jagged smile to make a classic jack-o’-lantern face.

You can also experiment with different facial expressions—happy, spooky, or even silly!
Bats, Spiders, or Spider Webs
Bats and spiders make great Halloween creatures to add to your painted rock collection.
For bats, start with a black rock and use white paint to create their wings and eyes.
To paint a spider web on a rock for Halloween, start by painting the entire rock black or white and letting it dry completely. Using a contrasting paint color or a fine-tipped paint pen, create straight lines radiating outward from the center like spokes on a wheel.

Connect these lines with curved, horizontal strokes to form the web pattern.
Spiders are easy to paint as well; just use black paint for the body and legs, and add googly eyes or draw your own.
Haunted Houses
A haunted house design looks amazing on rocks with an oval or rectangular shape. Paint the base with dark colors like black or deep purple, then add small windows, a crooked door, and a spooky tree.
Yellow and orange accents can give it that eerie, glowing light from within.
Frankenstein or Monster Faces
Monster faces are a fun option for rock painting.
Use green paint for the skin and black for the hair. Add stitches or vampire fangs with a fine brush or Sharpie and give him a pair of bright, spooky eyes.

Paint Gravestone on Rock
To paint an RIP grave on a rock, start by painting the entire rock gray or black.
Once dry, use contrasting paint or a marker to draw the shape of a gravestone, and write “RIP” in bold letters in the center.
Add a few cracks or lines for extra detail if you’d like as well as some grass at the bottom of the tombstone.

Tips For Painting on Rocks
• Choose smooth, flat rocks for the best painting surface, as they allow for easier brush strokes and detailed designs.
• Clean your rocks before painting to remove dirt and dust, ensuring the paint adheres better.
• Protect your painting surface with newspaper or cardboard.
• Use acrylic paint for vibrant, long-lasting colors, and consider using paint pens for finer details and outlines.
• If you are not artistic, get inspiration from Bullet Journal drawing. Just google what you are looking for and you’ll often find tips to make simple drawings.
• Some rocks are more porous than others and might require a couple of extra coats.

Cheap craft brushes are all you need for this project! Be sure to rinse the brushes well when you are finished painting.
I used a disposable paper plate as my palette and it worked perfectly.

No need to paint the underside of the rocks unless you really want to.
I found it easiest to hold the rock and paint around the edges, then place it down to paint the top part of the rock with the base coat.

As mentioned, acrylic paint pens make it so much easier to draw in and color details for your artwork.

I am already planning some fun Christmas rocks that I can make with these fun markers.

Creative Ways to Use Your Halloween Painted Rocks
Once your rocks are painted and sealed if you prefer extra outdoor protection, you can use them in so many creative ways.

Here are some ideas:
- Halloween Yard or Garden Decor
Painted rocks make excellent additions to your Halloween garden or porch decor. Scatter them among your plants or place them along the path leading to your door for trick-or-treaters to admire. - Party Favors
If you’re hosting a Halloween party, give away these painted rocks as fun party favors. You can personalize them with guests’ names or turn them into themed prizes for games. - Table Decorations
Halloween painted rocks make unique centerpieces for your holiday table. Place them in a decorative bowl, or use them as placeholders for a festive dinner. - Hide and Seek Fun
