Looking to add a little bit of spooky to your Halloween decor this year? This Halloween potion bottles DIY project is fun, easy, and budget-friendly.

Get all the tips on how to transform old wine bottles into a cute potion bottles display. No need to make your own labels, I’ll tell you how to get the ones in the post.

Collect Old Wine Bottles

If you have friends who enjoy a glass of wine, ask them to save their old wine bottles for this project.

That is exactly what I did!

Several neighbors and friends gave me some bottles, and within a few weeks, I had all the bottles I needed.

I suggest getting a minimum of 3 bottles to get a fun Halloween display.

Remove Labels

This step can be optional.

If you remove the old labels from the wine bottles, the new labels will go on much more smoothly.

I put mine in a double boiler and let the boiling water do most of the work. This worked great for a few of the labels, but some left a sticky mess behind.

If you plan on painting your bottles, take the extra time to use Goo Gone or something similar to give you a clean slate to work with.

Keep in mind, this is an easy, but messy process!

However, I am a lazy crafter and wanted to see how the labels would look over existing labels and some that left behind a residue, so I did not remove the adhesive left on the bottles.

Spoiler Alert: They turned out OK when placing the new Halloween labels over the old ones!

Paint or Decorate Bottles if Desired

If you want extra fancy or old-time Apothecary style bottles, try covering them with gauze and Mod Podge, then painting black. Barberellahome has a fantastic tutorial you should take a peek at!

Attach Spooky Labels

I created all of the labels for these bottles. You can print them out for your bottles from this post: Halloween Bottle Labels FREE Printables.

Note that if you are attaching labels over the top of the old ones, you will definitely want to measure which size labels you will choose.

Also, note that many wine bottles are shaped somewhat differently. The labels do not attach smoothly if applied over a curved surface.

So, please measure before printing your labels.

Attach Using Mod Podge

Mod Podge makes it easy to apply the labels when printed on regular printer paper or even cardstock.

Use Mod Podge on the back side of your label and smooth it on the bottle, ensuring it is exactly how/where you want it.

Full Size Adhesive Sticker Sheets

Sticker sheets are the easiest way to attach the labels.

I keep this full sheet of self-adhesive paper on hand because I use it for all sorts of things.

To use it with the Halloween wine bottle label:
• Just print.
• Cut the label to fit, peel off the backing, and attach.
• Smooth out the edges or lumps in the paper.

How to Display in Your Halloween Decor

Displaying Halloween potion bottles made from old wine bottles can add a spooky element to your decor. Here are a few ideas for showcasing your bottle creations.

Create a Potion Display Shelf

One of the easiest ways to display your potion bottles is to arrange them on a shelf or mantel. Add some Halloween decorations, such as faux spider webs, skulls, candles, and small pumpkins.

Place LED string lights or flameless candles behind the bottles so they glow eerily in dim lighting.

Incorporate Potion Bottles Into a Table Centerpiece

Transform your dining table with a Halloween-themed centerpiece featuring your DIY potion bottles. Pair the bottles with a large black or metallic tray to create a vignette, then add creepy elements like plastic spiders, dried flowers, or fake bones.

This setup is perfect for a spooky dinner party or as a conversation starter for guests.

Outdoor Potion Station

Consider creating a potion station on your porch or entryway if you’re decorating for outdoor Halloween festivities. Arrange your wine bottle potions on an old wooden crate or weathered table, adding a few lanterns for an extra scary vibe.
