Designing a vignette is a great way to group together some of your favorite things, adding a personal touch to your home.  Not sure where to begin? Let me help!

5 Tips for Designing a Vignette

To style the perfect vignette, gather several items you love and let the experimenting begin.  It typically takes me several attempts before I find a look I’m pleased with.

1.  Start with a tray, basket, place mat, etc.

Use this to ground your items and pull everything together.  Another option is to style a grouping on a shelf or the top of a table.

But, I have found the items often look more cohesive if there is an element pulling them together, letting everyone that sees the display know they are meant to be together.

2.  Include items of varying heights

This brings depth to the cluster of objects for improved visual interest.  Go-to items I love include stacks of books, candles, greenery (faux or real plants), and flowers.  I am a practical girl by nature, so my vignettes usually improve the functionality of a space.

In the picture below, I have some of my favorite potted herbs.  They look pretty, but are also incredibly functional.

3.  Incorporate a theme in your vignette

Don’t overthink this!  As I mentioned before, I am practical to a fault.  So, my themes are usually based around the specific room or area where I’ll be displaying the vignette.

In my kitchen, for example, my items would start with salt/pepper, spoons, dishes, sugar, etc.  Then I just add other items for texture and height variation.

Search your cabinets to find pretty, neutral colored dishes to add to the display.

In a bathroom, group together pretty soaps, wash cloths in a bundle, relaxation candles, etc in a farm house rustic wire basket.  Living room vignettes might have a place to house remotes, candles, coasters, books…be creative and make the vignette unique to you.  Start paying attention to how decor magazines have styled groupings and try to replicate that!

4.  Use a variety of textures

I love using burlap covered books, galvanized metal, wood, and plants.  If you have pretty flowering bushes at your home, take advance of those!  Add a cutting of fresh flowers in a vase.

When in doubt, use a beautiful plant that adds nice greenery to make the space look alive. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, there are so many beautiful faux plants to choose from!

5.  Use an odd number of items

This is a design element you’ve heard over and over.  It works, so just do it!

Three or five just seem to work when pulling items together in a group.
