Starting a blog can be SO overwhelming! Believe me, I love creating great DIYs, but dealing with the technical aspects of blogging does not come naturally.
Don’t spend countless hours researching “how to start a blog” like I did. Let me help you! This post will walk you through all the steps to set up your blog with Bluehost.
You’ll also want to check out my list of favorite blogging resources here!
Disclosure: This page contains affiliate links which means I earn a commission if you purchase something through a link at NO extra cost to you. BUT, I will only provide suggestions I trust. See my Disclosure Policy for details.
You NEED a self hosted WordPress site. This means WordPress.org NOT WordPress.com. In order to do this, I went through Bluehost and suggest you do the same.
As a newbie blogger, you likely do not want to spend a lot of money getting started. Bluehost is an affordable option for a small to medium sized blog and they provide good customer service.
Starting a Blog, Get started!:
To get started, go to www.bluehost.com/track/loveourreallife where you’ll be directed to Bluehost through my affiliate link. Click the “get started now” green button.
Select your preferred plan. The basic plan is all you’ll need!
Select your domain name:
Now you get to select your domain name! This is fun and exciting, but I suggest you take a little time to research the blog names you are considering. Bust a Name is a great place to play around with different names and see if your option is available. After you have decided on your perfect domain name, type it in the “new domain” box.
A few things to consider regarding your blog name selection:
- Select a name that relates to the niche you will be blogging about.
- Do not select anything that is hard to spell.
- Make sure you really love it. Think about this for a while! Ask trusted friends and family their opinion.
Type in your account information/package information:
After you’ve entered your account information, you are then able to select the package. This is where you determine the LENGTH of time you are willing to commit. Of course, the 36 month option is the best per month deal. If you really have intentions of giving blogging a try, I highly recommend you consider this.
Keep in mind, the costs listed are for prepaid hosting, meaning you will pay for everything up front. Bluehost does have a money-back guarantee! When I first started, it gave me comfort knowing I could get a refund if I later decided blogging wasn’t for me.
There are several other services available as shown on the screen shot below. I would not sign up for the extras at this point. The only extra option I chose was the Domain Privacy Protection. You need this for your own personal privacy.
Note that after your site is set up, you will need to set up a backup system ASAP. I use Vaultpress and have been pleased. I assure you that protecting your hard blogging work will be very important!
Enter payment information.
Welcome to Bluehost!
You will receive a welcome email from Bluehost. If you got your domain name through Bluehost, you will also receive an email telling you to activate your domain. Do this!
You will now need to set up your new site!
Create a password:
Be sure to choose a very secure password and remember it!
Click the blue “log in” button. You are ready to get started!
Choosing a theme:
You are now able to select a free theme from the options provided. I would suggest staying with the default theme for now and take some time to browse through various themes to find the best fit for you!
My current theme is Brunch Pro by Shay Bocks. Some of my other favorite themes come from Restored 316 Designs. Keep in mind that all of these themes can be personalized to fit the color schemes and fonts you love.
If you decide to purchase a theme, you will be given step-by-step instructions on set up. So, don’t worry about that!
Time to start building your site:
Click on the blue “start building” button.
Begin the WordPress set up:
If you are familiar with WordPress, you can click on “I don’t need help”. But, if you are like I was, you need all the help you can get. If that is you, follow the remaining set up instructions. They walk you through it!
After set up is complete, you can start writing posts for your blog! You can select a theme and adjust the settings to your liking!
Your new domain will have a “coming soon” message until you launch:
You now OWN your own site!
In my opinion, another must have for getting your blog up and running is Building a Framework by Abby Lawson. When I first started my blog, I floundered for several months until I made this purchase. Abby gives detailed advice on how to start, grow, and monetize you blog. You won’t be sorry!
Starting a blog doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Do things right the first time. I think you’re going to love Bluehost. Please let me know of any questions you might encounter.
