Painting Faded Garage Doors // Instant Curb Appeal
Faded garage doors…not the first thing you want to see when pulling into the driveway.
You guessed it. I’ve been painting again! This time painting our faded garage doors. As you look through the upcoming photos, you may ask yourself why I even bothered since the change is not dramatic. I’ll save you from wondering and just tell you it was because they were driving me crazy.
I knew going into the project that the difference wouldn’t be obvious to some, but the doors have been a “when I get time” project for at least this past year.

How to paint faded garage doors:
Every time I pulled into our driveway, I thought to myself, “I’ve got to get around to painting those faded garage doors!”. They were SO ugly. At first I thought they were just dirty, so I spent some time washing them to no avail. Painting was a must!
One lesson I’ve learned from my countless DIY projects, is sometimes the end result will not be as notable to others as it is to you. But, the most important thing is completing a project that brings you joy. Ultimately, that is why you are doing it in the first place.
The previous color was Black Fox by Sherwin Williams, which I love. But, I had nearly an entire gallon of Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams left over from my front door makeover I completed several weeks back. Since the colors are so similar, I decided to go for the Urbane Bronze and avoid buying more paint.
Check out the faded garage doors:
Pay specific attention to the bottoms of the doors where they are REALLY faded!
I taped off the weather stripping on the top of the doors first.
I started to tape off the weather stripping on the sides, but decided it would just be easier to pull the weather stripping aside and paint.
After painting the trim and just inside the trim:
Just a tiny bit of the faded door is left! Hello bright, new paint!

While I was finishing the doors, I decided to give the planters a new coat of paint as well. I used some Rustoleum spray paint I already had to freshen them up a bit.
Half way there with the planters; so much better already!
Garage Doors AFTER:
No more faded garage doors!
Even though they aren’t a dramatic difference, I am so happy they are finished. I can officially check that project off my list. It really wasn’t that big of a commitment. I spent about 3 1/2 hours repainting the garage doors which was totally worth it so I can stop wasting my time thinking about them!
Are your garage doors faded?
If so, don’t stress about this project. It was easy and relatively quick to complete.

Thank you, Amber! There is always a project, isn’t there?!
Looks great. Nice touch with the planters as well.
Thanks, Stephanie! I didn’t realize how faded they were. One project typically turns into several!
I think they look great! My husband and I are in the process of buying a house so lots of little fixes like this.
Thanks, Sarah! There is ALWAYS something 😉. Good luck with purchasing your next home!
What a simple way to add to the curb appeal. It’s such a simple fix that makes a huge difference. It looks great!
Thanks, Michelle!
It looks beautiful! There are literaly no private owned garages where I live. There is no space, so we all rent spaces somewhere!
Sending love from Austria!

Thanks, Theresa! I love hearing different ways of living. Thanks for the long distance visit!
It looks amazing and actually makes a big difference! Ours is on my to-do list for someday and I’ve been thinking about going darker (they are an off-white color) but I love how dramatic it looks here.
Thank you, Christina! It wasn’t as daunting as I imagined. Best of luck with yours!
Wow that big project turned out great looking and your home is beautiful. Tons of work but so worth the effort.
Thanks so much, Candy! I really appreciate the kind comment. I’m very glad I have it checked off my project list.
My metal garage doors are awful, and are totally on my to do list. I’m glad to see your project turned out so well!
Thank you, Laura! I think I spent more time dreading it than actually painting. Best of luck with your doors!
Looks great!
Thanks, Jenifer! Project ‘Garage Makeover’ is almost complete 😉
