Several years ago, 2007 to be exact, I started keeping a notebook just to write down all of my Christmas purchases. It has been so much fun to look back at what I got my children (and everyone else on the list!) each year.

Keeping track of Christmas gifts has also been a great way for me to avoid buying friends and family the same presents year after year. If your memory is subpar like mine, any tool to stay organized is a win!

Brainstorming: Who Will Need Gifts This Year?

I’m not a big fan having to run out for a last minute gift, so a holiday gift tracker makes it much easier to see what I need, who I need to buy for, and what I have already purchased.

An easy way to get started is by making a list of all the family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers you will be buying for this Christmas season.

Your list might consist of:

  • Immediate family members.
  • Extended family members.
  • Coworkers.
  • Neighbors.
  • Teachers

Sometimes I find that once I start my list, it’s hard to find a stopping point!

Extra Tip: I keep track of gift ideas throughout the year to take away part of the stress during this busy time of year.

Wish List: Jotting Down Gift Ideas

If possible, have the gift recipient create a wish list of what they might consider to be the perfect gift. This will be an awesome resource as you begin your shopping.

Encourage family and friends to be as specific as possible with the items they are hoping to receive. A website or even a direct link to an item is super helpful for online shopping.

It’s always important to hold onto that gift receipt, though. Sometimes returns or exchanges are inevitable, so having the receipt makes it a little bit easier.

Extra tip: Use a basic spreadsheet and make it shareable if you want all of your family members wish lists in one place! A good spreadsheet is a great digital organizer.

Budget: Allocating Funds

After you have your list of who you want to buy for and an idea of possible gifts, it’s time to establish how much money you will spend on each individual. Holiday spending can get out of control pretty quickly.

If you are participating in a gift exchange, you might have agreed upon and established the price limit which is great for planning your Christmas budget.

It’s a great idea to plan for all of this gift buying all year long, so you are prepared! Going over the holiday budget can make for a very stressful time.

Remember, this is the most wonderful time of the year!
