How to Increase Energy and Motivation:

If you’ve been reading my blog, you have seen a recent post in which I suggested selecting a word for the year.   My word is focus.

Lately, I have had some struggles with motivating myself to do all of the things I need to do.  Then it occurred to me –most of the things on my list are not actually things I “need” to do, but things I just felt would be nice to knock out.

It turns out, I was having difficulty motivating myself because my list of “to do’s” lacked focus.  When I stopped just adding things to my list that didn’t really have to be accomplished, I was able to set my mind on completing the things that I knew would make a difference.

Do you ever have difficulty getting up and just starting ‘the thing’?  I am not an expert in this area, but I have found some helpful tips to get me working toward my goal.  Here is a list of tips I have recently been applying in my life that you can use to improve your motivation:

5 TIPS To Get MOTIVATED:

1)  FOCUS!

As I mentioned earlier, one of the biggest traps is getting too many tasks going at once and then becoming paralyzed, accomplishing very little or even nothing.

Narrow down what you really want to accomplish and focus on that.  What deserves your undivided attention?  What task will be the difference in moving you toward your goal?  Make that your concentration, not the never-ending list of tasks that will not provide a return on your effort.

Say “no” to anything that is prohibiting you from having success.  I realize this is not easy, nor is it always practical.  But, it works!

2)  JUST START.

We often want our circumstances to be perfect before we jump into a task.  There is rarely an optimal moment to begin a project.  Just start.

After starting a task, your priorities will become clearer and you will be more equipped to make that focused to-do list to get things done that need to be accomplished.  This tip can apply to almost anything from work, to housework, to blogging, to homework, to projects, etc.

“Just starting” is a habit that can be learned.  Start the most important tasks at the beginning of the day when your tank is not already running on empty.  Doing something outside of your comfort zone, or just something that you don’t feel ready for is draining.  Put yourself in a position to succeed.

3)  YOUR HEART DOESN’T HAVE TO BE 100% INTO IT ALL OF THE TIME.

Even if you are incredibly passionate about something, you will experience times that you just aren’t feeling the love.  This is where a routine comes into play.

My husband demonstrates this strategy with his exercise routine.  He has exercised, on average, about 5 days/week since we have been married.  Being healthy is important to him, but he doesn’t always want to jump out of bed every day.  Developing a routine has formed a habit.  Even though he doesn’t always feel like putting in the time, this habit pulls him through when he’d rather sleep in.

As the old saying goes, you’ll never regret when you’ve done it, but always regret when you don’t.  Even if your heart isn’t all in, move forward.  You’ll regain your passion at some point; and waiting for that optimal time is just setting you back.

4)  FIND ACCOUNTABILITY.

Tell someone the goal you are attempting to achieve, and you’ll work harder to accomplish it.  This could be used for saving money, following a budget, starting a blog, training for a 5K with a friend…essentially anything.

Knowing that a friend, your spouse, a business partner, etc. is going to be asking you if you’ve completed said task, you will work harder to finish it.  The key with accountability is finding positive individuals that want you to succeed and will push you when necessary.

It is uncomfortable if someone is pushing you when you are ready to quit.  But, that extra boost might just be what takes you to the next level.

5) TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

Taking care of your basic needs is essential for success.  Eat a healthy diet, exercise and maintain good health, get a good night’s rest, establish healthy relationships, and practice positive self-talk.  It is impossible to feel motivated if you feel lousy.  Taking care of yourself is crucial in moving you closer to your goal.

Motivation is challenging.  But you can do it!  Apply the above 5 tips to get motivated in your life and let me know your feedback.  I’d love to hear what helps you to feel more motivated!
