Tips to Make American Flag Mason Jar Set

  • This task is super easy, but you will need to allow proper time for the paint to dry prior to jumping into the next steps. It’s best to keep this project going on the side, while you are doing other things at home as there is a lot of waiting involved.
  • Use light coats of paint as they will dry so much more quickly.

Let’s dive into this simple diy summer flags craft tutorial so you can create your own America decor to add a patriotic touch to your home.

Materials

  • Ball Mason Jar x3 or Kerr canning jars.
  • Acrylic craft paint in red, white and blue.  I actually used some white chalk paint as I had lots of white. Either acrylic or chalk paint work just fine.
  • Small craft paint brushes. No need to be high quality.
  • Painter’s tape
  • Star Stencil. I linked to stencils you can purchase. But instead of buying these, I just googled star clipart and printed one on thick copy paper and carefully cut it out to give me a fairly precise edge for a homemade stencil.

USA Mason Jar Set Tutorial

Clean your three jars thoroughly and allow to dry.

Whether you are using new or old mason jars, I would suggest giving them a quick soap and water washing. Allow to dry, then you are ready for the fun.

Blue Mason Jars (one jar)

  • Paint thin 2 coats of blue acrylic paint onto one of the jars.
  • Allowing sufficient time (30 minutes for thin coats) to dry between coats and after final coat before stenciling stars.
  • Once blue paint is dry, firmly hold star stencil in place (I randomly painted stars all around jar) and paint a very light layer of white paint inside of star stencil.
  • After first coat of white paint is dry, go back over white stars with more white paint and free hand the star edges for more crisp lines and the body of the stars for bright white stars (I did not do this, but might go back and do as I have time).

Red White Jars (two jars)

  • Use painters tape to section off for stripes. I started by taping around the lip of the jar, then spaced the distance of my painters tape down the rest of the jar for each stripe. This allowed for three pieces of tape around the jar.
  • Ensure both jars are taped at the same levels so your “flag” will flow well when lined up side-by-side.
  • Paint white first with 2-3 light coats. Allow appropriate dry time (~30 minutes) between coats and after last coat.
  • Remove painters tape
  • Apply new painters tape over white paint (you’ll need to do light touch-ups later when removing tape).
  • Paint 2 coats of red paint allowing ~30 dry time between coats and after last coat.
  • Remove painters tape and make any touch-ups needed.
