Think of your five closest friends…I was reading an article the other day that really had an impact on my heart.  It has been said many times before, but that day, my thoughts kept going back to it.  In this article a quote was mentioned by motivational speaker Jim Rohn “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Are our friends lifting us up or bringing us down?

Wow!  The average of the five people we spend the most time with…

Our thoughts and our actions are hugely influenced by those closest to our heart.  Our “people” can impact our personal and professional lives today as well as our future.

Positive influence

Certain friends in our circle are joyful, successful, motivated, driven, generous, encouraging, and kind.  These are the individuals who tend to have a positive perspective on life and what the future might hold.

After spending an afternoon with this type of friend, you leave the moment feeling like you want to contribute more good into the world and work a little harder to be a better person.

Negative influence

While other relationships can just feel toxic as their constant negativity towards life leaves you feeling depleted. These friends are, more often than not, takers and rarely consider giving back to the friendship.

What makes a good friend?

A good friend does not mean a perfect person.  It merely means someone that makes your life better with them in it. Friends do not have to be exactly like we are or hold the exact same opinions.  Frankly, a good friend will often open our eyes to perspectives we had not yet considered.

A friend can be a spouse, coworker, family member, someone you’ve known for years, or even someone you are just beginning to know.

Who are you allowing into your inner circle?

Do they bring up the average of who you want to be?  Are they encouraging you to be a better person?  Do they help light a fire for successes in your life, both personally and professionally?

What kind of friend are you?  Are you generous, kind, and thoughtful?

Let’s be the best influence we can be!  Not all of us are going to be someone that changes the world.  But, perhaps we can help make the world around us a better place.

We get to choose the kind of friend we are to others.  Be the “good friend”.

  1. There aren’t enough heart emojis for how much I love this post. Over the last 2 decades, I’ve really been trying to weed out all the toxic relationships I’ve allowed to build up over the years. Happy to say that my five closest peeps are pretty awesome now.

    1. Thank you for this sweet comment! Life is too short to allow so much of our hearts to be burdened by toxic people. I’m so glad you have have found your tribe!

  2. I couldn’t agree more – I have a verrrrry small group of close friends but to be really honest my very closest friends I spend the majority of time with are my sisters – the more I think about it I spend most of my free time with family

  3. Wow I hadn’t heard about the average. I knew that our friends influenced us. Definitely I want to be a good influence for my friends average.

  4. Tbis is so true. We’ve always told the kids that who they cboose to be friends with is very important as they are growong up and trying to figure life out. I guess is it true for all of us, at any age. And to leave others feeling better for having spent time with you is just as impotant. Thanks for sharing!
